Where the price of things is found
Long before a jeweller buys gold or a refiner buys crude, a price for them is discovered somewhere — and in India, increasingly, that somewhere is MCX, the country's leading commodity-derivatives exchange. Like any exchange it owns nothing of what is traded; it provides the electronic marketplace where buyers and sellers of commodity contracts meet, and takes a sliver of every trade. It is a near-monopoly in its field, almost debt-free, and earns a staggering return on capital — better than seventy paise on every rupee employed — because once the platform exists, each extra trade costs it almost nothing.
Profit has compounded at close to half a year over five years as commodity-options trading has boomed, and the return on equity has surged past fifty per cent.
A superb business at a superb-business price
The market has noticed. At about fifty-five times earnings and twenty-five times the value of its assets, this is priced for excellence to persist. A capital-light, high-return, dominant exchange merits a premium — but the price already pays for a great deal of future growth, so the buyer leans on quality, not on any margin of cheapness.
What to weigh
The recent surge owes much to a boom in options trading, and booms normalise — a buyer should not treat peak volumes as the steady state. Exchange revenue is inherently cyclical, swelling and shrinking with market activity. The company also passed through a costly technology-platform transition not long ago, a reminder that even a toll-taker has operational risk, and the regulator's stance on derivatives can shift volumes. At fifty-five times earnings, a calmer market would be felt.
What this asks of you
Own this as a decade-long stake in the marketplace where India prices its commodities — a genuine franchise with rare economics. The discipline is to hold a wonderful but market-linked business through the inevitable quiet spells, and to remember the price already credits the boom. Buy it for the franchise and the runway, size it for the cyclicality, and judge it over years rather than by any single roaring quarter.
