The registry of who owns what
Every share an Indian investor owns sits not in a drawer but as an electronic entry in a depository, which records who owns what and updates it each time something is bought or sold. There are only two such depositories in the country, and CDSL is the larger by number of accounts. It is a beautiful toll business: it charges small fees for opening accounts, for holding securities, and for the transactions and corporate actions that flow through — and as more Indians invest, the number of accounts and the fees grow almost on their own. It is near-monopoly infrastructure, almost debt-free, earning around twenty-five paise on every rupee of capital.
A wonderful toll, richly priced
The market values this rarity highly: about fifty-eight times earnings and thirteen times the value of its assets. A capital-light, duopoly toll-taker deserves a premium, but this is a full one, and the case rests on the steady widening of India's investor base rather than on any cheapness. The company hands back over half its profit as dividend, a sign of how little capital it needs to grow.
What to weigh
The toll, like all market tolls, rises and falls with activity — much of CDSL's transaction revenue tracks trading volumes and new-account openings, both of which cooled lately, pulling recent profit down. The regulator sets some of its charges, capping how freely it can price. The promoter holding is low and has slipped, and working-capital figures jumped recently, both worth noting. At fifty-eight times earnings, a quiet market is felt quickly.
What this asks of you
Own this for the decade as a quiet toll on the financialisation of Indian savings — more demat accounts, more securities held, more transactions, year after year. The franchise is genuinely rare and lovely; the discipline is to accept market-linked ups and downs and a rich starting price. Buy it for the structural growth in investing, size it for the cyclicality in the figures, and hold it as the unglamorous registry beneath a deepening market.
